We found out late we were moving stadiums. So we made it the campaign.
A forced venue change is usually a communications problem. We made it the story instead — with a punk cover of the Indiana state song.
It was determined very late that we would be moving back to our historical home — Michael A. Carroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus — for the 2021 season.
Late venue decisions are among the least glamorous problems in sports marketing. Season creative is already in motion. Ticket operations have assumptions baked in. And there is a natural instinct to treat the change as something to manage quietly.
The alternative is to ask whether the constraint is actually the story.
Back home again
"Back Home Again in Indiana" is sung before the Indianapolis 500. It is arguably the most emotionally loaded piece of music in the state, and it is about returning.
We were returning. To the stadium where the club started.
So rather than a season campaign that happened to mention a venue change, we built one where the venue change was the emotional proposition. Not "we've moved" — "we're home."
The constraint you're trying to explain away is sometimes the most honest thing you have to say.
Why we led with it
The detail I'm still fond of
A traditional song risks reading as sentimental. Indy Eleven's supporter culture is not sentimental.
So the version we used was recorded by a local punk band — the one that runs Punk Rock Night at the Melody Inn, one of Indianapolis's oldest punk bars. It appeared in advertising and played on match days every time we scored.
That single choice did a lot of work. It kept the emotional weight of the original while sounding like the people in our stands. It rooted the campaign in a specific Indianapolis institution rather than a generic one. And it gave the goal celebration a piece of audio that belonged to us and nobody else.
What transfers
- Test whether the bad news is the campaign. Constraints often carry more genuine emotion than anything you'd have invented.
- Borrow local meaning, then translate it. The state song gave us weight; the punk arrangement made it ours.
- Give the best moment its own sound. Goal audio is repeated dozens of times a season — one of the highest-leverage assets in a stadium and one of the most overlooked.
- Speed is a creative constraint, not just an operational one. Built fast, and better for it.

What are you trying to explain away?
It might be the most honest campaign available to you.
