Career Story · The Honest One

The best campaign I built never ran.

Victory Is Ours was finished, approved and ready for the 2020 season. Then March happened.

Every portfolio is a highlight reel. That's the deal — you show what worked and quietly leave out the rest.

I want to include this one anyway, because leaving it out would misrepresent how the work actually goes.

What it was

Victory Is Ours was the 2020 Indy Eleven season campaign, built in partnership with Innovative, an Indianapolis agency. Full brand guidelines, a complete creative system, campaign architecture across every channel we operated.

It was, in my view, the strongest season campaign the club had produced. The word "ours" was doing deliberate work — a supporter-owned claim rather than a club-issued promise. It came out of everything we'd learned about how this fan base thinks of itself.

Then COVID-19 arrived and the campaign never came to fruition as we had planned.

Why I keep it in the portfolio

Three reasons.

The work was real. Guidelines, system, architecture — all of it exists and can be judged. That a global pandemic intervened says nothing about the quality of the thinking.

What happened next was the actual test. The pivot away from this campaign — into pandemic-era fan engagement, into The Eleven Q, into keeping a community intact with no matches to attend — was harder and more revealing than launching Victory Is Ours would have been. The following season we posted the club's highest-grossing year.

Anyone senior has a version of this. A campaign killed by a budget cut, a restructure, a founder changing their mind. Pretending otherwise makes a portfolio less credible, not more.

Judge the thinking on the thinking. The launch date was never the part I controlled.

Why it stays in

What transfers

  • Build systems, not one-offs. Because it was a full brand system rather than a set of executions, most of it survived into later work.
  • Separate the work from the outcome when assessing people. Plenty of excellent work dies for reasons nobody in the room controlled.
  • Show one thing that didn't land. It makes everything else you claim more believable.

I'm still proud of this. That felt worth saying out loud.

Ask me about the things that didn't work.

It's usually a better interview than the highlight reel.
